Revue: A Story In Pictures

Raymond Mander and Joe Mitchenson / 1971

With a foreword by Noel Coward of nearly 40 pages - almost the entire text portion of the book, barring captions -
this would seem like more of a scrapbook than a tome, but the photos... oh, the photos! English music hall in a
Golden Age, every one of them. You can't stop yourself from looking, and smiling, and wishing you were there.

And that foreword by Sir Noel? How I laughed to read that the same producion of Oh! Calcutta! I'd seen as a
theatre graduate student in London (and howled at) had been walked out on by the great man at intermission...
and he had only lasted that long by muttering "This is insupportable!" under his breath to his seatmates.
Yes, forty pages by Noel Coward is worth four hundred by anyone else.

Many thanks to Dave R. for locating this great book for me... in a charity booksale!
(It is the only one I've seen with the original dustjacket, making it even more valuable.)

When I was in New York recently I had lunch with John Kendrick, drama professor from NYU
(www.musicals101.com) and he agreed, if you are a musical theatre fan this should be on your shelf.
