A poet (Coleridge) writes a poem about Kubla Khan
building a "pleasure palace" ( shades of "Shangri-La")
in a Chinese province named Xanadu.
Right there anyone with half an imagination
could have had the beginning for a thousand stories.
Let's see... there was the 1941 movie "Here Comes Mr. Jordan"
(an adaptation of the play "Heaven Can Wait"), the 1947
Rita Hayworth film "Down to Earth", and of course the 1980
cult classic film with Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly...
have I left anyone out?
Basic story of modern musical: Greek muse falls for human boy
in 1980. Together they turn condemned theatre into roller disco.
The musical opened on Broadway in 2007 and ran for over 500
performances. It earned an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best
Musical and a Drama Desk Award for Best Book. It was also
nominated for Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Book.
The US Tour began in 2009, while a national tour and several
foreign productions were also planned.
I bought the book because I kept track of the production as went
through all the crazy things that can happen to a show prior
to opening, etc. but was not able to go to New York and see it.
I'm hoping one of those touring companies will be in my area.
