La Gioconda, an opera in four acts by Amilcare Ponchielli in 1876, is based
on Angelo, Tyrant of Padua, a play by Victor Hugo.

Although Ponchielli was already one of the leading composers, La Gioconda (libretto by Arrigo Boito, listed as Tobia Gorrio) further heightened his fame.
It is now considered to beone of the greatest examples Grande Opera, and the version that is played today (first presented in 1880) is constantly performed throughout
the world, and the ballet music for The Dance of the Hours is one of the most popular classical pieces of music.
